Generally, the months of January and February are kind of long and drawn out for the personnel in a school district. The effects of the very cold temperatures and the most snow in 10 years (just heard that on the radio this morning, so it has to be true) can lead to a little bit of cabin fever for all involved. If the elementary students have had to spend much of the time indoors due to cold temps this can add to their stress as well.
However, this time of year offers something rather exciting and rewarding to the position in which I occupy as superintendent of schools. It is at this time of the year that I am finishing up with a task for which I take great pride. This is the period in which the grades are coming in to our recently departed graduates that have chosen to further their education at a variety of institutions both in Minnesota and across the country.
So what does this have to do with my position? I am the one who gets to look over the grades submitted and approve the payment of a number of scholarships for our recent grads. The majority of these are payable at the completion of a successful first semester and transcripts are submitted to provide evidence that this has taken place. It is truly a privilege to see the number of students that do well after they leave our buildings and to see their efforts, both at Central Public Schools and during their year of higher education rewarded with these scholarships. The results that come through are an effort of a combined group, those being the parents, students, and staff at Central. This is a team that has produced a great deal of successful citizens to enhance the local communities as well as the national communities.Last week, our 4th grade boys were able to play a short inter-squad scrimmage at halftime of the boy’s varsity game.
We appreciate Coach Dent and the boys allowing us to do so, as well as the booster club as I know halftimes are a fund raising opportunity for their group with the shooting contests. If anyone saw the boy’s faces as the crowd gave them a round of applause following their exhibition they could see it was worthwhile. The smiles were pretty contagious. Thanks for the support.
